A non-league football match was abandoned on Wednesday night after the referee was assaulted by a spectator.Goal Sports FC of Rudston were playing Eastway Sports of Scarborough in the Scarborough League trophy final at Pickering Town FC’s ground. Goal Sports were leading 2-1 in a game which had become quite fraught with Eastway having a penalty saved and three players sent off. At 82 minutes an Eastway fan saw red and ran on to the pitch, shoulder-barging the referee and knocking him to the ground. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We were called at about 9pm on Wednesday 29th March to a report that a man in his 60s had been assaulted during a football match in Pickering. Officers attended the scene, and at 11:50pm the same day, a 23-year-old man was arrested at a property in Eastfield on suspicion of wounding with intent. “He remains in custody at this time.
